Death Penalty In America must now be killed.
So someone kills 12 Innocent people in a Cinema and is not given the death penalty yet some who happen to kill one person and the killer may be barely a young man in some cases do get the death penalty ?.

Surely It is time for America to wake the heck up and smell the coffee beans, The death penalty is barbaric and in too many cases racist, its got to go.

Known as the "Bloody Code", at its height the criminal law included some 220 crimes punishable by death, including "being in the company of Gypsies for one month", "strong evidence of malice in a child aged 7–14 years of age" and "blacking the face or using a disguise whilst committing a crime"

Early examples of crimes given capital punishment in the UK as late as 1816.

The Timothy Evans case was one of the reasons we abolished the death penalty in the UK, a truly horrific set of circumstances

One of the problems with the death penalty, is its arbitrary nature,as the case in the original post illustrates.

Even in the UK when we had capital punishment, post world war two, the reprieve rate for men was 45%, but 90% for women. I'm opposed to capital punishment, but if you have it ,execute all those deemed to be guilty.

The use is very much declining in the USA. Only used to any extent in the southern USA, mainly Texas. Even in Texas, nobody has been sentenced to death this year, up to the end of June.

What do you expect us on WHO to do about it, Hairy? I am pretty sure if we Facebooked or Twittered the Yanks about this, they would quite reasonably tell us to mind our own business.

The biggest issue is old bill fitting people up for crimes, hard to send someone to their death with so many question marks over police behaviour.

If the 12 innocent people that got shot were armed then this would never have happened....

I am aware of that Capitol but I thought there were only 10 or so states that still had it and its 27 so it is still going pretty strong.

Just hate it mate the whole American Justice system is created to make money and screw the poor.

Re: Death Penalty In America must now be killed.
States have different laws Hairy. Death sentences must be unanimous. Many states don't have the death penalty, others do and use it fairly frequently.

You are unlikely to have a federal law on it any time soon, so absent a Supreme Court ruling halting it it won't go away in a lot of places anytime soon.
